Christmas, the Old-World way
In Europe, the Christkindlmarkt is a beloved Advent tradition dating to the late Middle Ages — open-air street markets held in town squares from Bern to Nuremberg through the weeks before Christmas. Berne, Indiana brought that tradition home. Launched in 2024 by the Berne Community Development Corporation, the Berne Christkindlmarkt fills the blocks beside Muensterberg Plaza with wooden chalets, warm lights, and the sounds and smells of a European Christmas. Visitors keep reaching for the same description: it feels like stepping into a Hallmark movie.
What you'll find
Swiss and German specialty foods and holiday treats, hot drinks to warm your hands, and artisan vendors selling handmade gifts, ornaments, and seasonal décor. The entertainment rolls all season: choirs and live music, horse-drawn carriage rides through the historic downtown, photos with Santa, kids' activities and contests, live reindeer, and the crowd favorite — a glow-in-the-dark parade lighting up a December evening. All of it happens steps from the 160-foot clock tower, which was practically built for this.
A market with a mission
The market is more than a party — proceeds support Berne community projects, including improvements to the Muensterberg Clock Tower Plaza and Lehman Park. Every bratwurst and ornament helps build the town.

December evenings in Indiana call for a warm meal. After the market, Berne's restaurants are steps or minutes away — thin-crust squares at Pizza King, a tenderloin and a craft cocktail at Fulton & Main on Friday or Saturday night, or a family dinner spread.
