The Furniture Capital of Indiana

Furniture Country

Why shoppers drive to Berne for their sofas — a century of craftsmanship, three destination showrooms

A century in the making

Built in Berne since 1926

Berne's official nickname is the Furniture Capital of Indiana, and it's earned. The town's Swiss and Amish woodworking heritage grew into a genuine furniture industry more than a century ago, and it's still going strong: Smith Brothers of Berne — celebrating 100 years of American craftsmanship in 2026 — employs hundreds of skilled craftspeople who build custom upholstered furniture by hand right here in town, on kiln-dried hardwood maple frames. Their pieces sell in hundreds of stores across more than forty states, the Discovery Channel featured them as a model American manufacturer, and dealers travel to Berne to see the goods — the town doesn't go to the furniture world; the furniture world comes to Berne.

For visitors, that means something rare: showrooms stocked with furniture made minutes away, sold by people who know the craftsmen. Here's where to shop.

Bernhaus Furniture

Nearly everything can be personalized: size, wood, stain, and hardware. Bring a sketch or an inspiration photo and they'll quote a fully custom piece, typically built in about twelve weeks. Their own crew handles delivery, assembly, and in-home setup. Watch for the bear in the showroom — the same Bern heritage as the bear on Berne's flag.
