A century in the making
Built in Berne since 1926
Berne's official nickname is the Furniture Capital of Indiana, and it's earned. The town's Swiss and Amish woodworking heritage grew into a genuine furniture industry more than a century ago, and it's still going strong: Smith Brothers of Berne — celebrating 100 years of American craftsmanship in 2026 — employs hundreds of skilled craftspeople who build custom upholstered furniture by hand right here in town, on kiln-dried hardwood maple frames. Their pieces sell in hundreds of stores across more than forty states, the Discovery Channel featured them as a model American manufacturer, and dealers travel to Berne to see the goods — the town doesn't go to the furniture world; the furniture world comes to Berne.
For visitors, that means something rare: showrooms stocked with furniture made minutes away, sold by people who know the craftsmen. Here's where to shop.
