Main Street, shop by shop
Berne's downtown is made for wandering — historic storefronts, friendly shopkeepers, and everything within an easy walk of the restaurants and the clock tower. Here are the shops to work into your visit: most sit steps apart on Main Street, with a couple more worth the short drive up US 27.
Cuckoo & Co.
Downtown's newest treasure hunt — a charming multi-vendor antique and vintage store that opened in fall 2025, with a thoughtfully curated mix of heirloom antiques and nostalgic vintage finds. The name alone tells you it fits right into a Swiss clock town.

The LastingLite Emporium
Housed in the beautifully restored 1918 Fair Store Building — maple floors, tin ceiling, original skylight — this family-run emporium is home of the original interchangeable electric candle, the LastingLite, made locally. Three thousand square feet of home decor, baby gifts, handmade soaps, and vintage finds, plus a sweet-tooth bonus: DeBrand Fine Chocolates and old-fashioned candy.

Berne Hardware Co.
A genuine old-time Main Street hardware store — the kind visitors call "an extraordinary find," with antique display fixtures and staff who actually know their products. Beyond the tools, paint, and hard-to-find fix-it items, there's a surprise inside: a big baking and cooking section stocked with Lodge cast iron, cookie cutters, kitchen gadgets, and even candy-making chocolate. Half hardware store, half treasure hunt.

Richard's Jewelry
A jewelry store has stood at this Main Street address since 1921. Richard Lehman — a former mayor of Berne — gave it his name in 1962, and owners Ron and Karleen Sprunger have carried the tradition forward since 1985. Fine jewelry, over 250 bridal styles, quality watches, and in-house repairs on the area's only laser welder — the kind of craftsmanship Berne is known for.

"Ecke" is German for "corner" — and this corner of Main Street is shopping with a heart. An MCC Thrift shop rooted in Berne's Mennonite heritage, Et Cetera Ecke offers clean, well-organized racks of gently-used clothing and household finds alongside fair-trade goods, with every purchase supporting relief and development work locally and around the world. Great prices, friendly volunteers, and your treasure hunt does good.
